How to save money on your holiday shopping

1. Don’t fall for manipulative advertising.

I think that impulsive buying is just about the easiest way to spend money during the holidays (aside from your 1 year old’s knack for hitting that “1-click buy” button on Amazon!). Yes, that giant “ONE DAY SALE” sign is tempting, but how “on sale” is it, really? And did you know that MOST of the larger companies (especially department stores and big brands), have a “one day sale” nearly every day of the week? Beware of advertising created to give you a sense of urgency, most of the time they are just trying to see how fast they can get that cash out of your wallet!

2. Always go in armed with extra discounts.

There are so many “extra” ways to save money! Always check for store coupons (either printable or in-ad), before you leave the house. If you are doing online shopping, ALWAYS check for cashback bonuses. VISA and AMEX regularly have their own offers available, or you can save even more by going through Ebates or Swagbucks. If you don’t already have an Ebates account, it’s FREE to join and you can sign up with my referral link to get a $10 CASH bonus.

3. Know your bottom line (or dollar).

Spend some time researching prices ahead of time so you have an idea of how much you want – or are willing – to spend. Many blogs and websites archive deals from years past so you can search for a particular item to see how low the price has gone. I usually go in with a small price range in mind and will buy the product once it falls in that range. I do think it’s important to give yourself some range though, otherwise you might miss out on a truly GOOD deal just because it’s 7 cents higher than it was last year.

4. Don’t spend all of your money (or your time) on “Black Friday.”

Sure, there are good deals to be had, but there are often even better deals coming as we get closer to Christmas. Driving around in circles and standing in line for hours only wastes gas and might just give you a few more gray hairs. Instead, go out and do something FUN with your family and enjoy those turkey leftovers! Besides, there’s always Cyber Monday…

5. And on that note, DO spend all of your money (or at least a chunk of it) on “Small Business Saturday.”

I think that it is so important to support the “little guys” on every day of the year, but if they want to make a big deal of it the first Saturday after Thanksgiving, why not? AMEX is no longer offering a statement credit (boo!), but you can still find some great deals at the local mom and pop stores (my favorite are the consignment!), and it’s worth it for that warm, fuzzy feeling you get knowing that your money was well-spent.

Super Peanut Butter Cream Pie

Yesterday was my husband’s birthday, and even though he decided to buy his own “big” birthday presents this year, I couldn’t resist putting together a few of his favorite things to spoil him a little – including making him a delicious dessert!

pbpie1A new leather camera/laptop bag, Hot Buffalo Pretzels, Good Beer, Velvet’s Peanut Butter Buckeye Ice Cream (that I forgot to add in for the picture), and Peanut Butter Pie – what more could a guy ask for?

I was originally inspired to make a peanut butter cream cheese pie after watching a video on Facebook. I didn’t love the recipe though, so I decided to make my own version, which includes a little less cream cheese and a lot more peanut butter! If you LOVE peanut butter, this is the stuff dreams are made of! 🙂 It’s like a peanut butter explosion dancing on your taste buds!

This recipe is super simple, and perfect for the busy SuperMom who wants to make something tasty without spending all day in the kitchen! It’s a perfect dessert to take to Thanksgiving or really, any (peanut-friendly) family gathering because it is quick to throw together but the results are very impressive!

You can stop right here … but why would you want to?

pbpie3Chopped Reese’s cups make the perfect “crust!”

pbpie5
Yep. Things just got real … real scrumptious!

“Super” Peanut Butter Cream Pie

*One 15oz jar (approx. 2 1/3c) of Natural Creamy Peanut Butter

*16oz Cream Cheese (I used 1/3 fat)

*One 8oz tub of Whipped Topping (Cool Whip)

*2 cups of Powdered Sugar

*1tsp Pure Vanilla Extract

*Prepared Chocolate (or Graham) Crust

*Reese’s Cups and/or Reese’s Pieces to decorate

Mix together peanut butter, cream cheese and whipped topping in stand mixer or by hand. Incorporate vanilla, then slowly add in powdered sugar. Fill prepared Chocolate Crust, and decorate with candies. Chill in refrigerator for at least 4-6 hours before serving (or freeze for 2-3 hours, just be sure to keep an eye on it so it doesn’t freeze solid!).

NOTES: You certainly CAN use “regular” peanut butter (with sugar added), just use less powdered sugar, I would start with 1 cup and go from there.

Who is SuperMom?

When I was little, I always thought of my mom as SuperMom.

She worked hard, she loved us harder, and she was one of the most honest people I knew.

Now, with 3 little ones of my own, 2 of which are old enough to call me “SuperMom,” I realize how heavy that title – or should I say, cape? – can weigh. Some days I really feel like I have everything together, like maybe this parenting thing isn’t so bad after all, but other days … “super” anything is the last way I would describe my day or myself for that matter.

I wanted to start this blog in hopes of giving other moms a “leg up” so maybe they could unleash their own inner superpowers and quell some of the chaos going on in their own lives. I certainly do not have it all figured out, but I have been at this parenting thing for 8 1/2 years now so I hope that my experiences can give confidence to someone else just starting out with that squishy -but screaming – newborn, or help the mom whose kid just bubble-gummed their hair find a quick and easy solution for how to undo their toddler’s new do, or even provide some respite for the experienced mom who just needs someone else to tell her what the h*ll to make for dinner! 🙂

Every mom is a SuperMom. Yes, even you. And just maybe, even me.
